North Brink in Wisbech is, in Historic England's words, part of one of the finest and best preserved Georgian thoroughfares in the country. The listed pair at numbers 8 and 9 is brown brick with a slate-clad roof and a plain parapet, four storeys over a basement. Roofs like that are not a modern semi with a bit of scaffold on the drive. The slate wants matching rather than swapping for concrete tile, the parapet gutter behind the brickwork has to be lined properly or the water ends up inside the wall, and the lead needs dressing by someone who has done it before. We work on the old brick fronts in the town centre and on the ordinary houses around them, and we price the roof in front of us.
The tidal River Nene runs through the town and is spanned by two road bridges, so which side of the water you are on decides the run in, and anything headed for the far bank comes over a bridge. The town's flood defences went up after the 1978 flood and have been raised since. There have been no passenger trains here since Wisbech East station closed on 9 September 1968.
Wisbech counts 250-plus listed buildings, and the old roofs sit thickest in the centre, round The Castle, the Market Place and the Old Market. Tall Georgian fronts, steep pitches and stacks. Out on the later estates and terraces it is mostly plain or concrete tile on a straightforward pitch, with felt and GRP over flat extensions.
