Upwell runs in a line along Well Creek, the waterway that rises from the River Nene and carries on through Outwell and Nordelph to Salters Lode. Building followed the water rather than gathering round a green, so the village reads as one long frontage strung out along the creek. At the top of the scale is the Grade I listed Church of St Peter, built of Barnack stone and clunch with leaded roofs.
