Hunstanton sits on the west coast of Norfolk at the mouth of the Wash, and the borough council character statement calls its cliff top setting looking west unlike anywhere else on the east coast of England. The council also records that the town stands at the highest point on this geological shelf, giving it an exposed and bracing situation. That is the weather your roof has to live with. Wind off the water finds lifted slates, tired verges and flashings that were never dressed in properly, and salt air is hard on nails and fixings. We handle repairs and full re-roofs, ridge and verge work, flat roofs, leadwork, chimney repointing, guttering, fascias and soffits. Our vans come in off the A149 coast road, which runs south to north beside the Wash and turns east at the town.
The council character statement lists the local building materials here as carstone, white chalk, red chalk, knapped flint, red brick, gault brick and red clay pantiles, with Welsh slates added to that list. The Hunstanton conservation area was designated on 13 December 1984 and its boundaries changed in December 2009, so work inside it can need consent. The same document puts King's Lynn sixteen miles to the south, Heacham three miles south and Old Hunstanton barely a mile north.
Plenty of the older stock is carstone with hipped and gabled dormers and big chimneys. The character statement notes many slate roofs have been replaced with concrete tiles, and ribbed concrete pantiles put in place of the original slate on the terrace facing The Green. So we work across natural slate, clay pantile and concrete tile, often on the same street.
