Walk round Dersingham and you notice the stone. The borough council's conservation area character statement puts it plainly: "the chief building material of Dersingham is without a doubt, carstone". It turns up in a range of colours, from an orangey-brown, through various shades to very dark brown, and sometimes almost green. Old red bricks, probably made locally, and gault brick from the gault clays of Suffolk are used as dressings on some carstone buildings. That mix matters once you are working above it. Fixings, flashings and verge details have to suit the wall they land on, and a carstone gable with brick dressings is not the same job as plain brick. So we price off what is actually on the wall and get up and look before quoting, rather than working to a standard detail that suits neither.
Dersingham is located 7.3 miles (11.7 km) north-east of King's Lynn, on the A149 that runs from the town up to Great Yarmouth, so a van gets here on one straight run. Sandringham House lies just to the south of Dersingham, in the parish of Sandringham. The parish church, dedicated to Saint Nicholas, is on Church Lane, dates from the 14th century and has been Grade I listed since 1953.
Pantiles dominate the roofscape here, in every form: old handmade ones in red and black, newer handmade reds, and machine made modern versions. Flint is far scarcer than you would expect in a Norfolk village. In practice most work is pantile repair, bedding and pointing, with verge and ridge lines the usual weak points.
