The parish church at Castle Rising, St Lawrence, is Grade I listed and was built in the 12th century on the orders of William d'Aubigny. Its walls are carstone and Sandringham sandstone with dressings of Barnack limestone, and it has plain tiles to the roof. Small units mean a lot of laps and a lot of nibs to fail, so one slipped course can put water on the battens long before anything shows on a ceiling inside. We work off proper access, match replacements to what is already up there, and sort the flashings, verges and valleys at the same visit rather than leaving them for a second trip. The village is 4 miles (6.4 km) north-east of King's Lynn, so it is a short run out for us. It stands on the course of the River Babingley, which separates it from the lost village of Babingley. At the 2021 census the population was 200, a slight decrease from 216 at the 2011 census, so this is a small parish and we plan the day around one or two calls rather than a long list.
